How do you do? · Introducing yourselfはじめまして。

Instructor: NoomenClass of September 6, 2026

The first lesson: greetings, saying who you are and where you come from, the sentence N1 は N2 です and its negative, questions with か, の, も, and asking someone's age. Build your own self-introduction, then test yourself.

Grammar points

ぶんぽう
N1 は N2 です

“N1 is N2.” は marks the topic (as for N1…) and is pronounced wa. です ends the sentence politely, like “is / am / are”. Japanese puts the verb last: subject, object, verb.

わたし は マイク・ミラー です。Watashi wa Maiku Mirā desu.I'm Mike Miller.
さくらさん は せんせい です。Sakura-san wa sensei desu.Ms. Sakura is a teacher.
N1 は N2 じゃ ありません

The negative of です: “is not”. じゃ ありません is everyday speech; では ありません (dewa arimasen) is more formal.

サントスさん は がくせい じゃ ありません。Santosu-san wa gakusei ja arimasen.Mr. Santos is not a student.
わたし は きょうし では ありません。Watashi wa kyōshi dewa arimasen.I'm not a teacher.
〜ですか。

Add か at the end to make a question. Japanese writes a full stop, not “?”. Answer with はい (yes) or いいえ (no).

ミラーさん は かいしゃいん ですか。Mirā-san wa kaishain desu ka?Is Mr. Miller a company employee?
はい、かいしゃいん です。Hai, kaishain desu.Yes, he is.
いいえ、せんせい じゃ ありません。Iie, sensei ja arimasen. No, (she) is not a teacher.
だれ / どなた

“Who?” どなた is the polite form, used with あの かた.

あの ひと は だれ ですか。Ano hito wa dare desu ka?Who is that person?
あの かた は どなた ですか。Ano kata wa donata desu ka?Who is that person? (polite)
N1 の N2

の links two nouns: N1 describes N2 or owns it. “N2 of N1”.

さくらさん は にほん だいがく の せんせい です。Sakura-san wa Nihon Daigaku no sensei desu.Ms. Sakura is a teacher at Japan University.
わたし の なまえ は アハメド です。Watashi no namae wa Ahamedo desu.My name is Ahmed.
N も

“Also, too.” When the same thing is true of a second person, も replaces は.

さくらさん は せんせい です。Sakura-san wa sensei desu.Ms. Sakura is a teacher.
サントスさん も せんせい です。Santosu-san mo sensei desu.Mr. Santos is a teacher too.
なんさい ですか。

Ask someone's age with なんさい, or politely with おいくつ. Answer with a number + さい. Try the age reader below.

テレサちゃん は なんさい ですか。Teresa-chan wa nansai desu ka?How old is Teresa?
9さい です。Kyū-sai desu.She's nine.

Numbers and age

すうじ
