Karuta — the fastest card game you've never played

Karuta is a Japanese card game of speed and memory. Cards are spread on the floor; a reader recites a clue, and players race to slap the matching card before anyone else. The snap of a champion grabbing a card is genuinely too fast to follow. The classic version uses the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu — one hundred classical poems. Competitive players memorize all hundred and can identify a poem from its first syllable. There are national championships, held in full traditional dress, and the top title-holders train like athletes. Kids play simpler versions with pictures and kana — which is exactly what our Karuta Rush game is: you hear a sound, you find the kana, you tap it first. Same reflexes, same joy.
